Clear Signs

“Never, under any circumstance will I ever go to SWAU!”

These are the very words I constantly repeated throughout high school. I had no specific reason as to why, I just didn’t want to go there. After attending the International Pathfinder Camporee in 2009, I made a decision to attend a Seventh-day Adventist University. It was a welcoming and friendly experience to be around other Adventists and I wanted more of it.

After much contemplation, I finally decided to attend Pacific Union College. My pastor and his wife talked me out of it and told me I should go to SWAU. They were actually the second pastoral couple to tell me to go to SWAU, so I considered it. When some relatives found out, they were against the idea ,and so I didn’t know where to go at this point.

One day while talking with my mom, she asked me where I wanted to attend school. At that moment, I knew I had to make a final decision. I decided SWAU was the best option since it was a bit cheaper than other SDA schools and closer to home.

I arrived at SWAU in the fall of 2012, and I wanted to leave immediately. I didn’t like Keene and to make matters worse, my parents moved up here for work. That whole semester, I missed my home and friends back in South Texas. I cried a lot--more during that semester than I would in one year! I was miserable and angry. I refused to participate in anything or make any friends, although I did make one.

The following semester I joined the Missions Club, started talking to people, and things started to change. I was much happier and I made more friends. I began to notice the friendly people and professors who smile at you when you pass by, and I realized that this is exactly what I had wanted! I’ve been blessed with friends that help me grow in Christ and one of my favorite things about this school is that our professors pray; they pray for us!!

God is humorous. Every time I have said “no,” God has said “YES!” I never planned on ending up at SWAU, but I’m glad that God has brought me to this campus. It has become my home and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
